Maths
At Leavesden Green JMI, we want our children to develop into curious, confident and resilient mathematical learners. We want our learners to be able calculate efficiently but also understand the mathematics behind what they are learning, explain what they are thinking and apply their knowledge to different problems and contexts.
We use White Rose Maths as the base of our mathematics curriculum. It provides our teachers with a carefully sequenced approach to the teaching of mathematics. It helps us to ensure children build knowledge and understanding in small steps that also allow them to make connections between different areas of mathematics and revisit them over time. White Rose Maths supports our teachers with identifying the key mathematical progression that allows our children to develop a secure understanding before moving on to more complex mathematical ideas. As teachers, we adapt and supplement the materials provided to meet the needs of our children.
What Mathematics looks like in our school
Fluency sessions - Daily sessions that are designed to revisit key foundational concepts such as number bonds to ten or multiplication facts. These key facts underpin larger mathematical concepts.
Maths lessons - Daily sessions where new concepts are introduced following the steps set out in White Rose Maths where children learn new knowledge and how to apply them to a range of problems and contexts. In these sessions, children are encouraged to make connections, identify patterns and use mathematical vocabulary to explain their thinking. Children are supported with this using the Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract approach.
New mathematical learning is built upon prior knowledge. Teachers’ regularly revisit key concepts to support children who have had gaps in their mathematical knowledge identified.
